This 1950s AD Stenger home was lovingly purchased by clients who could see past the green dilapidated exteriors and the chaotic interior materials palette that was leftover from multiple remodels. The remodel of the home focused on keeping as much of the existing structure as possible, removing excess buildup from the previous remodels, and adding on to the house in a way that would allow for modern-sized spaces while maintaining the overall intent of the forms and street scale.
In addition to coordinating all architectural consultants, cwA+D worked with the homeowners to select all finishes, appliances, plumbing fixtures, and decorative lighting.
Candace describes the project in more detail as part of the AIA Austin Homes Tour 2022 Webinar series, and it is available to watch here.

This 1960s Huntington Beach residence received an extensive remodel that aimed to transform the client’s childhood home into a brighter and more modern version of what it once was. The design, a collaboration between cwA+D and Joseph Sandy, reconsidered and reshaped the floor plan layout, added square footage to allow for a larger more gracious master suite, and focused on bringing light and connection into the client’s new family home.
The remodel included reconfiguring the existing floor plan to incorporate a new mudroom and pantry, a spacious kitchen with a connection to the dining room and living room area, a flex room that can be closed off or opened up to the public space, a new 450sf master suite addition that frames a new backyard outdoor space and provides a large vaulted master bedroom, walk-in closet and master bath, new exterior paint to modernize the street view, bathroom overhauls, and new larger windows and sliding doors throughout to help brighten the spaces.
cwA+D and Joseph Sandy aided client selection of interior fixtures and finishes.

This Florence, TX addition began as a single prefabricated barn structure and was added upon over time with additional barn structures that added necessary functions and spaces, and naturally became a piecemeal eclectic group of barns that makes up a unique Texas ranch estate with great character. cwA+D’s addition design aims to expand the current residence, reshape and define an entry sequence, and modernize the exterior with a cohesive facelift while maintaining the Texas barn characteristics.
The addition includes an expansive front porch, walls of floor to ceiling glazing to connect interior to exterior, a new fireplace core, FEMA storm shelter, an additional office, storage space, and bathroom, adding windows for increased daylighting, and updating the exterior with a new color scheme.

1980s Acorn Deckhouse received a modern remodel to lighten, brighten, and upgrade while retaining its original unique character.
Named after AMC’s Mad Men, The Sterling Cooper Residence exudes a late 70’s cool vibe that invites visitors in for a cocktail or two, and it was important to the clients to retain and highlight this distinct characteristic.
The interior remodel included removing walls between the kitchen, dining, and living room to create a modern open-plan layout, expanding and upgrading the kitchen to create a chef-centric space with a 10 ft. island that doubles as entertaining area, upgrading lighting, electrical, and AV systems to bring the home into the 21st century, modernizing the powder room, master bathroom updates, family room and wet bar improvements, window and door upgrades, and structural and exterior restoration.
cwA+D was also in charge of all interior furniture, fixtures and equipment, and chose a mixture of new and vintage pieces to seamlessly blend into the mixture of new and old architecture.
The pool and exterior/landscape additions are currently under way, so check back soon for final photos.

Nestled under towering oaks in one of Cedar Park’s more established neighborhoods is a recently remodeled brick-clad residence and home to cwA+D’s newest addition.
The residence features a previously added covered outdoor patio, pool, and a converted porch which provides great bonus living spaces, but was missing an emphasized connection between the features. cwA+D’s design reworks the indoor/outdoor connection with a simplified path through the new sunroom, opens up unobstructed views to the the backyard and daylight with substantial floor to ceiling windows, and provides a covered connection to the existing covered outdoor patio.
Stay tuned for updates to the design and for the start of construction!

HANGING OUT, the design concept and name of this proposed fort, aims to provide a literal and metaphorical means of hanging for Fortlandia 2020 visitors. Our goal for the fort was to provide a destination for multiple types of play, refuge, relaxation, and imagination for multiple types of players. It was important that we created a fort that you could both play on and play in so that the fort could be activated in a variety of ways and directions. Some of our most fond memories of playing were at school playgrounds where we climbed, ran, and hid, and this fort proposal attempts to capture the essence of these memories.
The Parti begins with a climbing module made of steel framing and a grid of gym ropes that can be climbed, played on, and swung from. The module’s size is easily transportable, economical, scalable to suit different needs, and the steel frame and jute gym ropes provide a sustainable and durable material palette for climbing and hanging. For our purposes, we assembled 4 modules to create an appropriate play volume. We then carved a domed void into the grid of ropes at the center of the modules to create a secret spot for meeting up and hanging out. The final product is reminiscent of the geodesic play dome we’ve all seen at playgrounds before but in a reconfigured study of solid/void, types of play, and spaces for hanging and hanging out.
The unobstructed grassy field at Site 2 is the ideal place for hanging out because it provides the fort an opportunity to announce itself to visitors in two directions of travel, both welcoming them to play and reminding them to play before they leave, and the jute climbing ropes give the illusion of a cubed extension of the native grass. The paint colors chosen for the steel frame, blushing, and the dipped rope ends, stone fruit, highlight the fort with a fun and vibrant color that is easily visible while complimenting the natural colors and textures of the landscape palette. The dipped rope ends are colored as stone fruit, a darker and bolder version of blushing, to visibly hint at the secret spot in the center so that visitors don’t miss out.
Nestled in the snow-covered valley of Aspen, Colorado is KAA’s newest renovation project. At first glance, this warm modern home was once an uninspiring 80’s duplex. However, stringent design codes created challenging design opportunities. The existing duplexes’ side-by-side gable roofs were maintained, but the internal party walls were removed to open the upper level floor plan with a dynamic mountain-like ceiling form. Expressing the gable ends with full-height, wall-to-wall glazing, highlights the views to the mountains and ski slopes beyond.
